# About Quiet Detour

A handful of calm, practical calculators for planning a drive, in miles and kilometres, US and UK gallons.

## What it does

Quiet Detour works out the numbers people want before a road trip: what the fuel will cost and how to split it, how fuel economy figures compare between units, when you will arrive once rest breaks are included, what a scenic detour adds, and how long an electric car will take to charge. There is also a bingo card maker for the back seat.

## How it works

Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, there is no account to make, and the pages keep working if you lose signal after they have loaded. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views; it does not use cookies, and it never receives what you type into the calculators.

## Where the numbers come from

The unit conversions use the exact legal definitions of the mile and of the US and UK gallons. The break advice follows rule 91 of the UK Highway Code, and the charging levels come from the US Department of Energy. Each calculator lists its sources on its page. Where a figure is an estimate, such as charging losses or how fast charging slows near full, the page says so and lets you change it.

## Please drive safely

The results are estimates for planning, not instructions. Real journeys depend on traffic, weather, the roads and the car. Keep to the speed limits and the conditions, take regular breaks, and don't drive tired. Professional drivers must follow the legal drivers' hours rules that apply to them, which these calculators do not check.
